Behind The Face

Julian Nelmes, a distinguished designer with an impressive array of qualifications including ND, HND, BA(Hons), MCSD, and ISTD, has been making his mark in the design industry since 1990. His career began with a contract for 'Splinters' in Christchurch, Dorset, which opened the door to a variety of other local clients such as Bulkey Homes, Pennyfarthing, Murray & Hayward, and Mitchells. This early exposure to commercial design laid a strong foundation for his future endeavours, allowing him to cultivate a diverse portfolio that showcases his creative prowess.

 

Hailing from New Milton, Hampshire, Julian's artistic journey commenced at the age of 16 when he was accepted into the prestigious Shelley Park Art College, named after the renowned poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. There, he pursued a National Diploma in Art & Design, which he later complemented with a Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art & Design. This rigorous training not only provided him with the skills necessary to thrive in the industry but also led to significant opportunities, including a stint at Pinewood Studios and a chance to exhibit at a prestigious final show on The Mall in London. His academic journey culminated in 1996 with a BA (Hons) in Design from the University of Wales, College Newport, where he was recognised for his innate talent and creative flair by the esteemed designer and mentor, Tim Foster. 1996 was also the year he was awarded iSTD, International Society of Typographic Designers Award.

Over the next four years, Julian collaborated with some of the largest design firms, creating impactful work for high-profile clients such as Coca Cola, Malibu, B&Q, Max Factor, Baby Organix, Boddingtons, Ruddles Smooth, and Panda Pops, among others. His innovative vision and conceptual thinking were instrumental in developing iconic campaigns, including the original concepts for Coca Cola's 'diet coke break' and the memorable slogan 'Thirsty?'. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in establishing the branding for Triple Eight Racing, led by Derek Warwick, which has since become the most successful British Touring Car Team in history. Julian's contributions to the design field continue to resonate, reflecting his commitment to excellence and creativity.

In the year 1999, Julian Nelmes established his own design firm, Facelift Design and in 2000 was awarded MCSD, Member of the Chartered Society of Designers. Julian's work is prominently displayed throughout the UK, where he consistently delivers innovative solutions tailored to a wide array of businesses and individuals. His portfolio is impressively varied, encompassing strategic planning, graphic design, photography, marketing, construction, and consultancy services. Over the years, he has cultivated a remarkable reputation for his distinctive approach, which not only emphasises creativity but also focuses on generating tangible commercial outcomes.
